Information
Behavioral consultation (formerly known as IBIP) is a service purchased by Regional Centers, other agencies, and individuals for their clients. This service is currently available in Ventura, Kern, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo via Tri-Counties and in Fresno via CVRC. It was designed to meet the unique needs of persons with developmental disabilities by providing assistance in the natural environment. Trained behavior analysts are available to assist parents, teachers, and other concerned people in managing the behavior of persons with developmental disabilities. These analysts will develop an individualized behavior management program in whatever environment the client is experiencing difficulties.
What Can I Expect?
You can expect that the analyst will set up regular meetings with you to get your perspective on the problem. The analyst will also need to conduct what is known as baseline observations to determine the exact frequency of the problem behaviors. The length of these observations will be determined on an individual basis dependent upon the frequency, intensity and severity of the problem behavior. Following the baseline, you and your analyst will be setting up goals for the treatment program. These goals along with the baseline data, a functional analysis of the behaviors, and initial treatment recommendations will be presented to you for your approval. In some cases you will be able to implement the program on your own. However some times you will need some initial assistance from the analyst. The behavior analyst will be available to provide you with that assistance.
What Will Be Expected of Me?
You will be expected to keep your appointment with the behavior analyst. If you need to cancel, please call at least 24 hours in advance. Providing trained behavioral counselors is very expensive and the cost of uncancelled appointments cannot be absorbed. Therefore 2 "no-show" may result in termination from the program. You will also be expected to be an active participant in the program. In the beginning you will be sharing your knowledge of the history of the problem and at the end of the program you will be assuming direct treatment responsibility. The shift of treatment responsibility typically comes after the behaviors have reached the point where you can effectively manage them without assistance.
How Do I Get This Service?
If you are a Regional Center consumer you need to discuss this with your service coordinator. They are the ones who can initiate a request for behavioral intervention. If appropriate, your referral will be reviewed by other professionals at the referring agency. The necessary paperwork will then be processed to get the services out to you. If you are in the service area and are not eligible for Regional Center services, you may contact us at eBIP.com.
How Confidential is the Information That I Share with My Behavior Analyst?
You will be asked to sign a consent for release of information form, which will explain this issue to you. However, please be aware that all health care providers are required by law to report all suspected incidence of child abuse. Child abuse includes, but is not limited to: physical abuse, neglect, sexual abuse and emotional abuse. These reporting laws apply to anyone under 18, as well as many dependent adults. Reports of suspected abuse are filed with the appropriate agency. Behavior analysts are not used to investigate abuse allegations. They are, however, required to report suspicions just like any other health care provider.
Who Do I Contact If I Have a Problem with the Analyst?
You are encouraged to stay in contact with your service coordinator concerning both positive and negative feelings you might be having about the service. The Regional Center or referring agency will be monitoring the service, as well. You may request the name and number of your analyst's direct supervisor at the beginning of each intervention. In addition, we have developed a simple feedback form that we hope you take the time to complete. We welcome your positive feedback and your constructive criticisms. Holdsambeck and his Associates are committed to providing quality behavioral assistance to persons with developmental disabilities.
